Kyrgyzstan Visa Information for Travelers
Kyrgyzstan is one of the more accessible countries in Central Asia when it comes to entry requirements, but the details change from time to time, so treat this as a starting point rather than the final word and always confirm against an official source before booking flights.
Visa-free entry
Citizens of a long list of countries, including most of the EU, the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea and a number of Gulf states, can enter Kyrgyzstan visa-free for up to 60 days. For most travelers on a two- or three-week trip, this means you simply arrive with a valid passport and get stamped in.
Citizens of most other CIS countries can also enter without a visa, often for longer periods.
E-visa
If your nationality isn't on the visa-free list, Kyrgyzstan operates an electronic visa system that covers most travelers. Applications are made online in advance and are typically processed within a few business days. You'll need a passport scan and, in some cases, supporting documents about your trip.
Registration
Stays beyond a certain length historically required registration with local authorities. For most short-stay tourists on visa-free entry this doesn't apply, but if you're planning an extended stay, it's worth checking the current rule for your situation.
Border-zone permits
This one catches people out. Some of Kyrgyzstan's most striking destinations, Kel-Suu in particular and areas near the Chinese and Tajik borders, sit inside restricted frontier zones that require a separate permit, arranged in advance. It's not difficult, but it's not something you can sort out on the day.
If a border-zone destination is on your list, it needs to be planned for. On our tours that include these areas, we handle the permits as part of the trip.
Passport validity
Standard advice applies: make sure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your planned departure date and that you have a couple of blank pages.
Where to check
Requirements do change. Check your own government's travel advice page and the official Kyrgyz e-visa portal for the current position before you book.
