Naryn Region
Son-Kul is Kyrgyzstan's most iconic nomadic landscape a wide, treeless lake sitting at roughly 3,000 meters, surrounded by rolling summer pastures where herding families move with their livestock each year. From June to September, yurt camps dot the lakeshore, offering the closest most travelers will come to living as Kyrgyz nomads do: sleeping in a traditional yurt, eating fresh dairy and meat and watching the sky fill with stars far from any city light. The drive up is part of the experience, climbing over a high pass with switchback roads and sweeping views. Horse riding around the lake is the classic way to explore.
